Ride, the iconic British band of the late 80s and early 90s, reunited in 2015 with a mission to recapture their creative spark and push their music forward. Since then, they’ve released two acclaimed albums, Weather Diaries (2017) and This Is Not A Safe Place (2019), blending their signature guitar-driven sound with fresh, experimental elements. Their upcoming album, Interplay, connects the intensity and melodies of their early work with a broader sonic palette, incorporating synths, electronic beats, and noir-pop. Formed in Oxford in 1988, Ride became pioneers of the shoegaze movement, but internal tensions led to their breakup in 1996.
Upon reuniting, they found themselves embraced by a new generation of fans inspired by their early recordings. Interplayreflects on their history while embracing influences like Tears for Fears, Talk Talk, and The Cure, creating a fusion of their past and present. Despite challenges during the pandemic and legal battles, the band’s bond grew stronger, fueling the record’s themes of resilience and defiance. “It’s about rediscovering the chemistry we had in the studio,” says singer Mark Gardener. Drummer Loz Colbert describes the title as capturing the collaborative spirit that defines the album. With a renewed sense of purpose, Ride proves their legacy is alive and evolving.
